Tunnel-Documentation

  Task

Within the scope of a safety-related upgrade on single track railway tunnels new safety niches are established. Before these are constructed large format panoramic images of the planned areas were taken ensuring a proper documentation of the actual conditions. The image data were archived together with a specially made viewing software on appropriate media.
On request, imaging can be repeated at a later time and images can be compared.

  Imaging
Panoramic images of the tunnel walls were taken at the requested locations. Overlapping images ensure a complete coverage of the area. Each 360° panorama shows about 5 m of the tunnel at a geometric resolution of about 1 mm.

  Image evaluation
JMX PanoramaViewer is a software for inspecting the 360° panoramas. Besides a navigation meachnism and the geometric warp function a simple annotation tool is available. The annotations can be named freely and grouped accordingly. Using the toolbar subsequent images of a series (tunnel) are selected.

  Benefits

  • Complete documentation by overlapping image stripes
  • Fine details (cracks) visible by spatial resolution in the millimetre range
  • Damage can be referenced easier than in a conventional photograph
  • Eventual damage progagation can be documented
